Decades of Performance
Dame Patricia was best known as Hyacinth Bucket - pronounced "bouquet" - a comic creation who embodied the peak of affectation and class consciousness.
"She is a wonderfully awful character and I had great fun with the role enormously," the performer commented.
Keeping Up Appearances aired from 1990 until 1995, and a year later she was voted the most beloved female performer at the BBC's 60th anniversary awards.
Beyond television, she received recognition on stage as well as screen after beginning her professional life in the theatre in the mid-20th century.
With performances in London theater, she established herself in the US when she received the Tony Award for best lead actress in a musical on Broadway for the musical Darling of the Day in the late 1960s.
She was as adept at intense theater as she was at light entertainment - she appeared in Richard III and Henry V at the prestigious theater company, then received an Olivier Award for outstanding musical performance for Candide in the 1980s.
That decade also saw her become a television icon - being given roles by comedian Victoria Wood in As Seen on TV, and Alan Bennett in his acclaimed monologue series, including the 1988 piece A Lady of Letters, for which she earned a Bafta award nomination.
She received additional Bafta nods, for her Hyacinth role, in the early 1990s, then starred in the main character as a retired woman on a quest to solve crimes in Hetty Wainthropp between the late 1990s.
She received an OBE in 1993, a Commander of the British Empire in the 2000s, and the title of Dame in recent years.
