British Foreign Office has added 11 further destinations to its official advisory roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol toxicity from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the number of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only last month, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to multiple serious events like the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to notice.

Official Recommendations for Tourists

Government official a senior official stated that each tourist should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are having drinks overseas, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer advised.

"Should anything feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."

The full list of nations noted as presenting a danger of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
