Baltimore Stay Alive Powered by Derrick Henry's Quadruple-TD Performance, Houston Clinch Postseason Spot
The veteran running back ran for a year-best 216 rushing yards and tied a career high with four touchdown runs as the Baltimore Ravens staved off elimination by toppling the Packers by a score of 41-24 on Saturday evening.
Henry had three touchdown runs in the opening two quarters and then found the end zone once more on a 25-yard dash with under two minutes remaining in the game. His seventh 200-yard game moved him ahead of two legendary runners for the most in NFL history.
His 36 rushing attempts constituted a career high.
The Ravens (8-8) now must rely on the AFC North-leading Steelers lose at Cleveland on Sunday. A Steelers victory in Cleveland would extinguish the Ravens' playoff hopes. If the Cleveland win that game, the could win the AFC North by beating the Steelers on the road next week.
The Packers, falling to 9-6-1 lost their third straight, enabling the Bears to clinch the NFC North title. The Green Bay had previously secured a playoff berth earlier in the week.
Both teams were without their first-string QBs as the Ravens' star QB deals with a back issue while Green Bay’s Jordan Love is in the concussion protocol. The two replacement starters – Baltimore’s Tyler Huntley and Green Bay’s Malik Willis – were both effective in a game that saw only one punt.
The Packers' fill-in went 18-for-21 for a personal-best 288 passing yards and a TD pass, and he also ran for 60 yards and two scores before leaving after re-injuring a shoulder issue. Huntley was 16-for-20 for 107 yards with a scoring pass.
The deciding factor in the matchup was Green Bay’s inability to contain Henry, who helped the Ravens outrush the Green Bay 307-79.
Henry was not utilized in Baltimore’s final two series the previous week in a costly loss. The veteran running back’s absence in the final period was a hot topic locally all week.
The coaching staff made sure he got the ball frequently from the outset. His powerful running enabled the offense to put points on the board on their first five possessions and take a 13-point lead at the break.
He accumulated 15 rushes in the team's opening two drives and capped each of them with touchdown runs. He tacked on a further short TD run just before the second quarter ended.
The Packers got back into the game by outplaying the Ravens 10-0 in the third period.
After a field goal, the Packers elicited the initial punt of the night. The QB then ran for an 11-yard score to cut the deficit to 27-24.
But the Ravens answered on their ensuing drive.
Henry ran for a key gain on a third down play. He ended the period with a 30-yard burst. Those two plays set up a touchdown pass from the quarterback to his receiver.
Willis drove the offense into Ravens' land before hurting his shoulder and departing for the locker room. His backup threw an interception on his only pass.
Texans Lock Up Postseason Berth After Victory Over Los Angeles
CJ Stroud connected on two long touchdowns on the team's opening possessions, and the Texans went on to defeat the Chargers 20-16 on Saturday to secure a third straight postseason appearance.
The Texans (11-5) won their eighth in a row, their best run in several seasons.
The Los Angeles Chargers, also 11-5 had their four-game winning streak ended and ceded the division crown to their rivals.
Stroud’s two explosive TDs stunned the defense and gave the Texans a two-score advantage. On his first pass of the game, he hit a wideout for a 75-yard score. He later threw a 43-yard TD on the following possession.
He completed his first six attempts of the game. He ended the day with 244 passing yards.
The Texans' defensive unit forced third-down sacks on the opponent's opening drives. The Chargers were held to three-and-out on multiple early drives.
The Chargers' quarterback, competing with a broken hand, was sacked five times.
An interception of Stroud in the second quarter only resulted in a three points for the offense. Another takeaway failed to produce any scores.
The LA were stopped on the one-yard line by a key defensive play. The target saw the pass pop off his hands, leading to the change of possession.
The Chargers' kicker failed to convert a kick from close distance just before halftime and later missed an PAT attempt on the last possession after a score.
The Houston specialist converted field goals from beyond 40 yards to help secure the victory.
